The Modern Lifestyle

Our modern lifestyle may disrupt the natural balance of the skin microbiota and, in turn, affect the healthy functioning of the skin’s natural protective barrier. The skin is under constant pressure from environmental triggers, harsh cleansers and soaps, deodorants, and even cosmetics. While cleanliness is important, an excessive focus on cleansing may sometimes do more harm than good to the skin’s microbial balance. Frequent washing with harsh soaps and overly aggressive cleansing routines can compromise the skin’s natural equilibrium and reduce its ability to remain comfortable and well-protected.

Similar to the gut, which hosts a vast number of microorganisms, the skin is home to over a trillion organisms at any given time, including thousands of different microbial species. These microorganisms all serve a purpose. A proper balance—both in quantity and diversity—of these microorganisms, together with a well-functioning skin barrier, is essential for skin comfort and overall wellness. If this balance changes abruptly or gradually and epidermal barrier integrity is compromised, skin comfort and appearance may be affected. For this reason, the skin requires optimal care that helps maintain a healthy epidermal balance through gentle practices and the supply of essential ingredients that support the skin barrier.
